In autumn and spring the Mallorcan weather is perfect for hiking and invites hikers to experience and enjoy the island actively with various routes.

Hiking in the Serra de Tramuntana

Mallorca is made for people who like to exercise and walk and the multi-faceted richness of the landscapes and hiking opportunities is unrivaled. Hiking enthusiasts think immediately, of course, of the Serra de Tramuntana, Mallorca's mountain range which was declared by the UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage site and has several peaks over 1,000 metres high which offer marvellous hiking terrain. Walkers will find a lot of variety here with shady stone-oak forests, ancient olive trees, rocky, almost alpine terrain with wild goats, and then in contrast lush green valleys, meadows and pastures.

There is so much to discover on the way with ancient farms, monasteries, hermitages and former charcoal burners and snow houses where charcoal used to be produced or snow collected and stored. And all this quite apart from the views over the island, bizarre rock formations, and the sea on the horizon.

Dry stone route in the northwest of Mallorca

Most of the hiking trails in the mountainous northwest of the island are connected to the popular "dry stone route", Mallorca's long distance trekking trail GR-221 which leads through the Tramuntana Mountains and takes its name from the many traditional old dry stone walls along the paths, trails and roads. The dry stone route is not simply a path, it is supplemented by various side roads and secondary paths and the entire network currently comprises some 300 kilometres of hiking trails.

Very experienced hikers can walk the mountains in a week from Port Andratx to Port de Pollenca and the highlight is the 7 mountain huts located along the route (the so-called ''refugis'' where hikers can stay overnight.

The northeastern Serra de Llevante

But to limit the passion for trekking only to the Tramuntana mountains would not be enough as there is so much more - the northeastern Serra de Llevante for example, a mountainous region of rugged beauty that is still something of an insider tip among hikers, or the nature reserve of the Parc Natural de Llevant, one of the last untouched landscapes of the island where diverse flora and fauna, barren hills as well as wetlands and sand dunes can be discovered. But also in Na Burguesa, Palmas foothills, scenic surprises await the hiker.

Or why not climb Mallorcas only table mountain, the Randa, or scale the Felanitx monastery mountain and enjoy the fantastic views across the flat countryside? And all this quite apart from the various explorations along the coast, beautiful beach hikes and excursions to small, hidden, secluded bays, or various routes through the island centre.

Walking alone or guided hikes in Mallorca

No one can say exactly how many different hiking trails and routes there are on the island, but there may be several hundred. Lots of hiking trails are also suitable for inexperienced hikers and there are shorter routes which can even be walked with children.

For hiking holidays there is also a very large selection of guided tours of all lengths and degrees of difficulty offered by various organizers for small and large groups. You can, of course, go alone or make the hike with friends and family. Most of the hiking trails are well signposted and marked by coloured spots along the path or identified by friendly stone cairns. The golden rule, nevertheless, is that no one should travel without water and a hiking guide or hiking map, especially since there is no mobile 'phone reception in many places in the mountains.

The fact is that over a hundred thousand visitors who come to the island every year to hike and trek, can not all be wrong - what could be better on a clear sunny day than to lace up the hiking boots, breathe in the fresh, fragrant air of the island and enjoy its diverse and beautiful landscapes by foot? Everyone active can walk all over the whole island, and each at their own pace!
