location & surrounding area

The town Alcudia lies between the bay of Alcudia and the bay of Pollensa. This town contains a lot of Majorcan history and therefore it is a popular destination for those who want to learn more about the ancient history of the island. Even the name “Alcudia” leads back to the time of the Arabs.

Its origin is the Arabic “Al-Qudya” and means as much as “the hill” as the ancient city core was built on a hill back then. A lot of buildings from the Arab dynasty are still unchanged in Alcudia. Furthermore, tourists can have a look at the remains of the Roman colony “Pollentia”. The wall of the old town, which is incredibly well preserved, can be traced back to the Middle Ages. Alcudia is a great place to see that Majorca is not only about bars and beaches but also about history. But Alcudia has a lot more to offer than that: twice a week, on Tuesdays and Sundays, weekly markets are held in the lovely streets of the old town.

Whether you are looking for typical Majorcan specialties, for a beautiful purse made of nice leather or for jewelry, there is something for everyone! With some negotiation skills, you may even take home some special bargains. Consequently, Alcudia is not a typical tourist destination, but a place of history and a place where you can still feel the original Majorcan charm.

Three kilometers to the south, at the northern end of the bay of Alcudia, there is the famous tourist town Puerto de Alcudia. It is similar to Can Picafort and is characterized by many small hotels and a long sandy beach. After your exploration of the island's history, Puerto de Alcudia is the right place to relax, swim and sunbathe at the beach.
