Did you ever smell a Majorcan tomato? It smells delicious! It seems like the <strong>tomato caught the sun of the island<\/strong>! A requirement is that it really is sun-ripened, which means that it was harvested in the <strong>middle \/ end of July<\/strong>. Because even on the island, many tomatoes are cultured in a greenhouse, since there is a demand for it in many different varieties throughout the whole year on the markets.<\/p>\n<h2>Hanging tomatoes and oxtail<\/h2>\n<p>Different varieties are being cultivated on over 250 hectares on the island, whereby a yearly income of approximately <strong>12.000 tons<\/strong> of tomatoes is being generated. A famous type is the \u201ctomato to hang\u201d, the \u201ctomaquet de penjar\u201d, which is also referred to as the \u201cwinter tomato\u201d. The same applies for the oxheart, which is cultivated as \u201ccou de bou\u201d on the island. Also popular is the dark red to black \u201ckumato\u201d, the round salad tomato \u201ctomate bola\u201d and the \u201ctomate pera\u201d, the pear-shaped bottle tomato. This is the reason, why it is often hung on a string. It is being cultivated since the 16th century and is since then an <strong>indispensable ingredient for the islands cuisine<\/strong>. Especially in rice-based dishes but particularly for the <strong>\u201cPa amb oli\u201d<\/strong>. This bread with oil is apparently eaten in every bar and pub: on a piece of Majorcan farmhouse bread, the ramallet-tomato is squeezed out and drizzled with olive oil and salt. Some people also rub some garlic into it. Optionally, the bread is being covered with mah\u00f3n-cheese, serrano-ham or \u201csweet\u201c ham, fuet- or other sausages. Additionally, Majorcan olives, pickled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.portaholiday.com\/blog\/sea-fennel-may-mallorca-recipe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sea-fennel<\/a> and a few capers are eaten. In the form of a sauce, a brew, a vegetable, mashed, boiled, raw, etc. Preferably, the tomato is eaten with its favourite companions: onion and garlic.<strong> Popular dishes<\/strong> with those ingredients range from lamb leg until the fillet of mackerel and from the Majorcan tumbet-vegetables until the trampo-summer salad. And of course, you should not miss out the ice-cold tomato soup, the <strong>classical gazpacho<\/strong>. The tomato is everywhere and grows everywhere: in every backyard or garden and even in the balcony boxes.<\/p>\n<h2>Healthy and low in calories<\/h2>\n<p>Originally, the red, round vegetable comes from <strong>South America<\/strong>. Spanish conquerors brought the tomato together with potatoes to Europe. Quickly its healthy advantages became word of mouth. Previously also called <strong>\u201egolden apple\u201c or \u201elove apple\u201c<\/strong>, the tomato has a high amount of vitamin C, minerals (i.e. potassium) and trace elements. It prevents from radicals, coronary heart- and circulatory problems and arteriosclerosis. Only unripe, green tomatoes are not digestible and should not be eaten. It is also not advised to keep them in the fridge, because they will lose their taste and durability.<\/p>\n<h2>Gazpacho<\/h2>\n<p>Ideal for a <strong>hot summer day<\/strong> is our dish of the month, the gazpacho. Following you can find our recipe, which is easy to prepare and perfect to cool down, since the tomato soup is served ice-cold.<\/p>\n<h2>Ingredients<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_586\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-586 size-full\" title=\"Gazpacho is always served cold.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.portaholiday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Spanisches-Gazpacho-300x185.jpg\" alt=\"Gazpacho is always served cold.\" width=\"300\" height=\"185\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gazpacho is always served cold.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>500 g tomatoes<br \/>\n1 green paprika, peeled and pitted<br \/>\n1 red paprika, peeled and pitted<br \/>\n2 cloves of garlic<br \/>\n\u00bd salad cucumber<br \/>\n1 white onion<br \/>\n800 ml strained tomatoes<br \/>\n200 ml vegetable broth<br \/>\n50 ml olive oil<br \/>\n1 tablespoon white vinegar<br \/>\nSalt and pepper<br \/>\n1 small chilli<br \/>\nA little bit of sugar<\/p>\n<h2>Preparation<\/h2>\n<p>For the preparation, firstly cut all the vegetables in very small pieces. Add now the strained tomatoes, the cold vegetable broth, the vinegar, the oil, garlic and the small chili without seeds.<\/p>\n<p>Season now the soup with salt, pepper and sugar.
